tHE sWITCHBACK WAS A BIG ATTRACTION IN THE LATE NINETEENTH EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY AT FOLKESTONE'S PLEASURE BEACH. iT WAS RUN BY A "tHOMAS sINCLAIR" (uNCLE tOM) WHO ALSO RAN A SMALL AMUSEMENT ARCADE ORIGINALLY ON THE PIER AND THEN LATER IN A HUT NEARBY THE SWITCHBACK. iT WAS OPENED AND FREQUENTED BY NONE OTHER THAN QUEEN VICTORIA HERSELF AND WAS THE HeIGHT OF WHITE KNUCKLE RIDE TECHNOLOGY IN IT'S TIME.
SADLY THE SWITCHBACK WAS SOLD FOR SCRAP WHEN IT WAS DAMAGED IN A STORM AND WAS NEVER REPLACED. "uNCLE TOM" CARRIED ON WITH HIS ARCADE BUSINESS BUT THINGS WERE NEVER AS GOOD AS WHEN THE SWITCHBACK WAS IN ITS HAY DAY.
THOMAS SINCLAIR WAS MY GREAT great GRANDFATHER.
